An 8-member team from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)had, during a recent visit, thoroughly examined all aspects in the university. During its visit from July 21 to July 23, the members did a complete evaluation of Lucknow University and its administrative and academic working. The team had a look at the facilities available to the students, placement cell, library, hostel and mess. Apart from this, they also talked to the students, alumni and other stake holders. The team submitted its report in a closed envelope to the Vice Chancellor of Lucknow University on the last day – 23 July.

The NAAC assesses the overall systems along with teaching work in higher education institutions in India.Scoring high on all seven parameters, LU was commended by NAAC for being a leader in the implementation of New Education Policy (NEP)-2020. This has come despite the financial crisis that the university had to face in recent times.

Lucknow University is the only university in UP to get A ++ grading. It is now the 28th in the country to achieve this highest NAAC grading with a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 out of 4.

Highest grading

The NAAC grading of A ++ is the highest grading. It will be valid for the next 5 years. This was the third NAAC assessment of Lucknow University. In 2014, Lucknow University had got B grading, followed by B+ in 2020. The University was very keen to do better this time and improvements on several fronts had been made in the last two years. The new grading has been welcomed by everyone including the Vice Chancellor. The goal was achieved through hard work and dedication, says an official.

Sources say Lucknow University has been working on every parameter assessed by NAAC for the past two years and a half, and necessary improvements had been made. As per information from university sources, only 26.4% assessment was based on campus inspection, and the rest was based on data verification which was completely document based and highly transparent. Points that went in LU’s favour were proper documentation, solid proof, proper academic information and good achievements.

The university improved on NAAC parameters such as research, introduction of different student and teacher centric scholarships, research incentive schemes, use of information and communication technology, teacher recruitment drive, establishment of a student placement cell among others.LU reportedly received special appreciation for being a pioneer in the adoption of NEP. NAAC has termed LU’s NEP implementation as world class.

Last time, Lucknow University had scored poorly on the NAAC parameters of curriculum aspects and ‘infrastructure and learning resources.’ This was reportedly because of outdated curriculum, falling short on best practices on campus and poor infrastructure. However, this time the university scored highest on these two parameters as well as above 3.2 out of 4 on the remaining five parameters.

In ‘Infrastructure and Learning Resources’, LU scored an average of 3.76 marks in curriculum aspects (3.6), student support and progress (3.32), institutional values and best practices (3.75), research, innovation and extension (3.56), teaching-learning received. and Evaluation (3.53) and Governance, Leadership and Management (3.28) out of 4.

Expressing pleasure at the ranking, the Lucknow University VC Alok Kumar Rai said, “It was always our desire to show the true value of the University as the soul of this institution is sacred. Everyone at LU felt that we had the strength for greater recognition and therefore worked hard to improve every little aspect.Following the grading, LU is now a nationally recognized institution.”

He expressed his gratitude to the inspiration, guidance and special efforts of Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, who advised LU to have a separate charge for each NAAC parameter, and to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his continued support.

The Lucknow University administration had laid a red carpet in Lucknow University to welcome the NAAC team and made all arrangements for the team members to visit the sites on the campus such as library, class rooms, offices etc. Apart from this, food was also prepared by the students for the team members.
