All roads to New Delhi go via Uttar Pradesh and the Aam Aadmi Party is looking at making inroads into the Hindi heartland. Keeping that aim in mind the Arvind Kejriwal party will contest the upcoming District Panchayat elections in the state.
Leading charge in Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Singh, has made an announcement to that effect. The party leadership has said that the local body elections will play a good opportunity to gauge the mood in the state ahead of the 2022 battle.
The party which started its political journey with Delhi is working to test political waters at the grassroots with focus on ground zero. The state will be a basis for sprucing up operations, unlike previous strategy where it faced the acid test in Loksabha polls of UP along with states like Maharashtra and Gujarat only to fail.
The party plans to base its campaign on corruption and women’s safety, poll planks used to win the Delhi battle.
AAP face in UP, Vaibhav Maheshwari has told the media that beginning with Jila panchayat elections, AAP will strengthen its network before U.P. goes to polls in 2022. The other issues it plans to touch are corruption, unemployment, farmers issues, power among others.
As a runup to the polls, the party has already started networking across the state. There are silent protests happening each day. Meanwhile important faces are holding parleys with youngsters, women, and farmers.
Kejriwal is eager to take AAP to other states. Kejriwal will attempt to undo the bad performance that he first saw in a state like Haryana. Notably even in a state like Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party has not done well as it lost three of the four LS seats in the 2019 general elections.
AAP had initially halted its U.P. plans in the wake of the Delhi riots and the Corona pandemic. As the restrictions eased out, Kejriwal’s close aide Sanjay Singh (MP) started regularly camping in the state. Hailing from Sultanpur, Sanjay Singh has been regularly training guns at the Yogi government. Sanjay Singh has regularly raised the issue of Thakurwad in the state. He has also raised the issue of corruption in Corona kit purchase. Singh in no time has created a unique space for the AAP. Singh has faced several FIRs including one of sedition.
AAP fights hard as BJP has proved detractors wrong in the bypolls. Samajwadi Party, Congress, and Bahujan Samaj party have hardly left any political space with fixed vote bases. Barring Kejriwal’s Varanasi bid in 2014, AAP has almost deserted the state. In six years, AAP continues to suffer desertion.
