Afzal Ansari loses membership of Lok Sabha

Lucknow: The Lok Sabha membership of Afzal Ansari, the BSP MP from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, has been cancelled. On Saturday, he was sentenced to 4 years in the gangster case by the MP/MLA court of Ghazipur. His MP membership was gone 56 hours after he was sentenced.

Afzal’s brother mafia Mukhtar Ansari was also sentenced to 10 years in the gangster case. The court imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Mukhtar and Rs 1 lakh on Afzal. Mukhtar is already lodged in Banda Jail. Earlier, MP Afzal was on bail.

Gangster case was registered in 2007

The Gangster Act case against the Ansari brothers was registered in 2007, two years after the murder of Krishnanand Rai. The case was based on the arson that followed Rai’s murder and the abduction-murder of businessman Nand Kishore Rungta. The court has acquitted the Ansari brothers in Krishnanand Rai’s murder case, but this case of Gangster Act is related to it.

On 23 September 2022, both the brothers were charged under the Gangster Act. The decision in this matter was to come on 15 April. However, the hearing was postponed due to the judge going on leave.
