LUCKNOW: As part of the NCC’s national initiative “Shaheedon ko Shat-Shat Naman”, 3 UP Naval Unit NCC, Lucknow honoured the family of Shaheed Captain Harjit Singh who valiantly fought and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation during the Indo Pak War of 1965.
On the fateful night of 22 Sep 1965, the young, 21-year old Captain led from the front and successfully repulsed a Pakistani attack at his Battalion HQ Loc in the Western sector. He single-handedly coordinated the detachments, while directing and encouraging his men to keep fighting. His efforts were instrumental in beating back the enemy attack, but during this brave effort he was hit by a RPG round, killing him on the spot. For his steadfastness, fearlessness and supreme sacrifice, he posthumously received ‘Mention-in-Despatches’. Shaheed Captain Harjit Singh’s family was presented a ‘Shaurya Smriti chinh’ by Captain (IN) Navendu Saxena, the Commanding Officer of 3 UP Naval unit.
The family included the surviving siblings Shri Satjit Singh, Shri Jasjit Singh, Smt Anamika Singh and other relatives. They fondly remembered the anecdotes from the brave Captain’s life, his courage and commitment to the nation.
On this occasion, Master Chief Petty Officer R C Yadav, Head Assistant Manoj Kumar Shah and a team of Naval sailors & civil staff of the unit paid floral tributes to the brave heart. A large number of NCC cadets also paid homage to the brave heart and honoured the family with a ceremonial guard.
