Asthma patients should wear masks when they go out from their house – Dr. Surya Kant

Lucknow: On the occasion of World Asthma Week, “National Asthma Update” (virtual) organized on 8th May 2022 under the joint aegis of Department of Respiratory Medicine, K.G.M.U., UP Chapter of Indian Chest Society, Indian College of Allergy, Asthma and Applied Immunology and IMA-Academy of Medical Specialties. This seminar was organized under the patronage of Dr. Surya Kant, Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, KGMU. Dr. Surya Kant, former National President of Indian College of Allergy, Asthma and Applied Immunology, welcomed all the participants in the seminar. Dr. Surya Kant told that air pollution, poor lifestyle and stress are promoting asthma. Due to major use of fast food, asthma is increasing in the children. Dr. Surya Kant told that wearing a mask when going out of the house reduces the problem of asthma. Therefore, patients of asthma must wear a mask when they go out of the house.

In this seminar, Dr.Virendra Singh, former Chief Medical Superintendent of Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur, while highlighting the situation of asthma in India said that 43% of the total deaths due to asthma in the world occur in India. A major reason for this is increasing pollution and smoking. He stressed on early identification of asthma patients and proper treatment. Giving the slogan “Speak Asthma, Defeat Asthma”, Dr.Virendra Singh added that everyone should talk about asthma and work on proper treatment as soon as you know about the disease.Dr.Saurabh Mittal, Assistant Professor, AIIMS New Delhi, explained in detail about how to diagnose severe asthma. Along with this, different types of medicines and inhalers used in asthma were also highlighted by him. When generalised medications in severe asthma are not effective, in that case bronchial thermoplasty may be helpful.

Dr. Ajay Kumar Verma, Additional Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine, presided over the program and Dr.JyotiBajpai, Assistant Professor gave vote of thanks. About 150 doctors and residents from medical institutions of the India were participated in this program.
