Basic Education Department confirms that now no school in U.P. is teacher less

Lucknow: In what is a major thumbs up for the Basic Education framework in the state, it is learnt that for the first time after nearly two decades, none of the Council schools in the state are teacher-less. The department claims that the achievement has come just after five thousand new appointments.

In more than 1 lakh 58 thousand council schools till 2020, 13 percent were such schools where not a single teacher was employed. 40 percent of these schools were where one teacher was employed. There were 30 per cent schools where only 17 per cent schools had 2 teachers and 3 or more teachers. Reportedly out of the recruited 69 thousand assistant teachers, over 63 thousand 900 newly elected teachers were appointed in two phases last year.

The department has prioritized getting rid of teacher-less schools. In inter-state transfers of 22 thousand teachers, the department has ensured appointments in single teacher-less schools in every district. As a result, there is no single teacher-less school in the state.

The number of single teacher schools is a miniscule 5 percent. 47 percent of schools have 2 teachers and 48 percent have three and more than three teachers. A proposal had recently been sent to the government to fill 5100 vacancies left vacant due to various reasons. After approval, the directorate has planned to appoint these teachers.

An official has been quoted saying that under RTE, there is a provision to appoint one teacher for 30 students in  a primary school. In upper primary schools, there is a provision to appoint one teacher for 35 students. Based on the number of Council teachers, Shiksha Mitras and Instructors in the state, teachers have been deployed in most of the schools based on RTE standards. At present there are a total of 4 lakh 66 thousand 602 teachers in council schools.

ACS, Basic Education, Renuka Kumarhas been quoted as saying – We aim to soon appoint one more teacher in five percent of the single teacher schools. This would be an ideal situation when each school would have at least two teachers.
