Lucknow: As India witnessed yet another uprising in the form of the Bharat Bandh, it saw full support by the entire opposition in full solidarity with the farmers. In the bandh on Friday, there was complete bandh in many states of the country, but in BJP-ruled Karnataka and Gujarat, the government used its powers to quell the agitation and tried to crush the four-month-old agitation of the farmers.
The bandh was called by the United Kisan Morcha. United Kisan Morcha is the organization of the Kisan Union. The Morcha General Secretary Yudhveer Singh was detained by police in Ahmedabad while he was addressing a press conference. A video clearly shows that Yudhveer Singh is surrounded by the soldiers of Gujarat Police.
Similarly, in Karnataka, peasant leaders were detained in the capital city of Bengaluru. The detentions happened as people were protesting near the town hall. The leaders detained include Kavita Kuruganti of United Kisan Morcha.
Kisan Morcha convenor Dr Darshan Pal has condemned the detention of the leaders. He said that BJP-ruled states are trying to suppress the voices of protest in violation of democratic processes. Yudhveer Singh of the Indian Farmers Union Tikait and another key member of the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha were arrested in Bhavnagar. Kavita Kuruganti, Kodihali Chandrasekhar, Baya Reddy and other trade union leaders were arrested in Bengaluru.
Apart from this, Karnataka Police has arrested many leaders in Gulbarga as well.
With rail rook quite a frequent means to up the ante, thousands of farmers in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and other states protested and demanded withdrawal of the agricultural law and joined the Bharat Bandh. Four Shatabdi trains were also cancelled.
