Black Fungus ushers in Dark Times

Lucknow: In times when COVID – 19 has raised its ugly head in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Black fungus cases are increasing rapidly. Initially COVID cases were subject to black fungus but now patients living in home isolation and non-COVID patients are also falling victim to it. While patients are increasing on one hand, on the other hand the shortage of its medicine is also increasing. The situation is such that many patients admitted to private hospitals are not able to get even a single dose. There has been a steady line of family members at the Red Cross office throughout the day.

The number of black fungus patients has reached 700 in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, more than 50 people have lost their lives so far. The number of patients alone in Lucknow has reached close to 250.

Some reports say that there are more than two hundred calls for injections throughout the day. Cases have been reported from medical facilities like KGMU, SGPGI and Lohia Hospital. Cases of black fungus in non-covid patients have increased anxiety. Amphotericin-B injection used in the treatment of black fungus is being supplied by the central government. The Institute of Medical Education is providing these injections to medical colleges in the state. There is a system of providing injections from the Red Cross Society to the patients admitted in private hospitals after the permission of the Mandalayukta office.

The lack of amphotericin-B injection can be gauged from the fact that the Mandalayukta office allowed 720 injections till May 22, only for patients admitted to private hospitals in Lucknow. But the Red Cross has received nearly 90 injections. There are 5 to 7 injections in one day dose, according to this, a patient has to be given 18 injections for 3 days.

Families of patients are increasingly upset as the health of patients deteriorates.

The state government has also started preparing a strategy for this new challenge. There is a huge scarcity of medicine to treat this disease across the state. The state government is constantly in touch with the Center for this so that all patients can get medicine in any way.

It is also being alleged that private hospitals are hiding data of black fungus patients. Patients admitted to private hospitals are dying, but they are hiding the information of deaths and patients.
