Centre gives green signal for opening medical colleges in six more districts of Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: On Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ‘One District One Medical College’ program, the central government has given in-principle consent to open more medical colleges in six districts under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme. After this the process of opening medical colleges in Mahoba, Mainpuri, Baghpat, Hamirpur, Hathras and Kasganj on PPP mode has started and soon investors will be selected through tender.

The process of opening medical colleges on PPP model is going on in 16 districts of the state. The Union Ministry of Economic Affairs has recently given permission to open medical colleges in six districts on PPP mode under the VGF scheme. About Rs 1525 crore will be spent to open them and the central government will bear about Rs 1012 crore of subsidy. A college will get an average subsidy of Rs 160 crore. The work has started by selecting the investor for opening medical colleges in Maharajganj and Shamli. Treatment is also likely to start in Maharajganj by next year. Apart from this, medical colleges in Shamli and Mau are under process.

Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary, Medical Education, said that this is a big step in the direction of CM Yogi to provide better and accessible medical services to the common people. The state government’s money will be saved by accepting the proposal of the central government. The state government will give the district hospital and land on a 33-year lease. The investor will then return the medical college. It will be the property of the state government. Along with this, exemption in stamp duty and equipment subsidy etc. will be given.

Medical college will be available in 14 more districts by next year
