Amidst the rough and tumble of life some women stay home working as homemakers, there are others who are out there doing their job. Many of them being scientists who juggle with petri dishes and test tubes. Lucknow being a prime hub of scientific research and development has many science minds who have worked hard to bring quality research for all stratas to cherish. It has been a terrific week for many of the scientific community.
Not only have science minds bagged top fellowships, but there have been others who have been commended for their research acumen. Daughter of historian, Irfan Habib and a very highly acclaimed scientist, Saman Habib is known for her stellar work in the field of malaria parasite. Bagging the fellowship of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy, she now boasts of three premier Science academy fellowships in India. Continuing her winning streak, she has been elected for the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi fellowship.
Dr Habib is a chief scientist and Professor, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) in Molecular Biology Division, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research—Central Drug Research Institute (CSIR-CDRI), Lucknow.
Dr Habib has over the years taken deep interest in the malaria parasite and the molecular workings and functions of the relict plastid (apicoplast) of Plasmodium, protein translation and human genetic factors. She is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, The National Academy of Sciences India, Allahabad who has been awarded the National Women Bio-scientist Award, the Prof. BK Bachhawat Memorial Lecture Award, National Academy of Sciences, India and also got the CSIR Young Scientist Award.
Apart from Dr Habib, the other big news coming in from the city has been that even KGMU has got some feathers to its cap recently. As many as 31 faculty members and two students were awarded the Eminence in Research awards under the able guidance of KGMU head of Orthopaedic surgery, Prof. RN Srivastava. The felicitation was part of the Annual Research Showcase 2020. Each year this event is a stage for discussing and deliberating on ongoing research and publications. Dr Mohammad Kaleem Ahmad biochemistry department was awarded the Prof. Dhavendra Kumar young investigator gold medal for 2018 -19 while Prof Vishal Gupta of surgical gastroenterology department got the eminence in research award for highest impact factor journal. Dr Alka singh who did her Ph. D under Prof R.N. Srivastava of the dept of orthopaedic surgery got the best Ph.D thesis award. MBBS student Ahmed Qazir got an award for publication in high impact journal. Professor Srivastava himself was honoured with the “Eminence in Research Award” for two of his publications.
