Lucknow: During the second wave of the COVID – 19 infections, social media is being used to illegally fleece people of money. As basic necessities like Remdesivir and oxygen cylinders along with beds are in shortage, a gang of thugs has taken the social media route to try and con people in the name of getting people medicines, injections and oxygen. The gang shows a verified account on Twitter and Telegram and then they talk their way through to get money credited into their account by wrong means. Dharmendra Kumar who is the Inspector of the Surveillance Cell he got the leads and he acted on the numbers that were spreading the racket far and wide. The location was found to be near Silver Key Hotel in Vrindavan Colony and hence the police acted fast. The culprits twitter handle was found to be @anmolvirus.
The accused set the price of Remdesivir at 3500 and of oxygen at 8500. As soon as the money was transferred to the account, allegedly there number was blocked. They did not have an address hence they managed to escape thus far.
One person due to lack of oxygen died due to this fraud. The cops spoke to nearly 14 people. The gang had conned nearly two dozen people. 10 people have been fooled of 72,500 people. The two adolescents taken into custody have been booked under IT Act for misusing social media. Both the culprits have been found possessing mobile phones.
