Congress reworks its Central Election Committee before election season
Lucknow: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge constituted a 16-member Central Election Committee (CWC). The members of this committee also include CPP President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Whereas Priyanka Gandhi’s name is not in the 16-member committee. AICC general secretary KC Venugopal announced this . Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee headquarters, Venugopal said the formation of the Central Election Committee (CWC) would meet on September 17 and would be attended by all State Congress Committee chiefs.
Many new faces including 15 women in the committee
Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal said, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has constituted the Central Election Committee. Besides Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, other members of the CEC include senior party leaders Madhusudan Mistry, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Ambika Soni, N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Salman Khurshid, Chhattisgarh Deputy CM TS Singh Deo, Pritam Singh, Mohd Javed, Ami Yagnik, KJ. George, Omkar Markam, Venugopal and PL Punia.
The CWC has been formed a few days before the crucial assembly elections in five states – Rajasthan, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Chhattisgarh and about seven months before the Lok Sabha elections next year. Mallikarjun Kharge recently reconstituted the CWC, nearly 10 months after he was appointed the party chief. The reconstituted CWC has 39 regular members, 32 permanent invitees and 13 special invitees. These include 15 women and several new faces like Sachin Pilot and Gaurav Gogoi, who are among the regular members.
