England crash out of the semi final race

Bengaluru: Sri Lanka has achieved its second victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. On 26 October (Thursday), Sri Lanka defeated England by eight wickets in the match played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. To win the match, England had given a target of only 157 runs to Sri Lanka, which it achieved with 146 balls remaining.

Pathum Nissanka and Sadira Samarawickrama played important roles in Sri Lanka’s victory. Nissanka scored 77 runs on 83 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes. Whereas Samarawickrama scored unbeaten 65 runs with the help of seven fours and one six. There was an unbroken partnership of 137 runs for the third wicket between Samarawickrama and Nissanka.

Sri Lanka has won 2 out of 5 matches in this World Cup. The Sri Lankan team has now reached fifth position. Whereas this is the fourth defeat of the English team in 5 matches. Even if England wins its remaining 4 matches, it will have only 10 points. In this way, she is now almost out of the race for the semi-finals. England is currently in ninth place.

English team collapsed after a great start

The English team had a good start after winning the toss and coming to bat first. David Malan and Jonny Bairstow together made a partnership of 45 runs in 6.3 overs. Angelo Mathews ended this partnership by getting Malan caught out by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Malan scored 28 runs with the help of six fours.

England got the second blow in the form of Joe Root, who scored three runs and walked on the throw of Mathews. After this, Kasun Rajitha took the big wicket of second opener Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow scored 30 runs in 31 balls, which included three fours. English fans expected a big innings from Jos Buttler, but he scored only 8 runs on the ball of Lahiru Kumara. After Butler, England also lost the wickets of Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali cheaply.

The fall of England’s wickets continued and their entire team was reduced to 156 runs in 33.2 overs. Ben Stokes played the highest innings of 43 runs. Sri Lankan fast bowlers took a total of seven wickets. Lahiru Kumara achieved maximum three successes. Whereas Angelo Mathews and Kasun Rajitha took two wickets each.
