Free Booster Dose for all adults starts

Lucknow: It is now official that all adults are to be given free booster doses of the coronavirus vaccine at government centres for a special drive covering  75 days.

In a bid to provide third dose coverage, the third-dose coverage drive will be organized as part of the government’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations.

It is learnt that less than 1 per cent of the target population of 77 crore in 18-59 age group are already administered the precaution dose.

As per agency reports, about 26 per cent of estimated 16 crore eligible population aged 60 and above along with healthcare and frontline workers received the booster dose.

Majority of Indian population got their second dose over nine months ago. An ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and other international research institutions study shows antibody levels wane around six months.

The special drive will go on for 75 days when individuals aged between 18 and 59 years will be administered precaution doses for free from July 15.

Meanwhile the Union Health Ministry has reduced the gap between second and precaution dose of COVID-19 vaccine for all beneficiaries from nine to six months. This is based on the recommendation from National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI).

The government launched the second round of the ‘Har Ghar Dastak campaign 2.0’ across states on June 1. The two-month programme is currently underway.
