Lucknow: Lucknow’s Golf scene has fast turned into a dynamic space that sports watchers have seen grow with time. Not only are there big ticket competitions happening, there are many big names who are associated with the Golf Events. Adding zing to these events are the impeccably dressed Golfers who with one shot win hearts. Amidst all the glitzy appeal that the game has, the pandemic has brought bad times for the caddies who are the backbone of Golf.
Seeing the growing problems for the caddies who have suffered the most owing to shrinking pockets, Golf Club Joint Secretary cum Treasurer Umesh Jaiswal along with Sharat Awasthi & Rishi Awasthi both member of Lucknow Golf Club & owner of S. R. Engines distributed 100 bags of ration to caddies & other needy people of Martin Purwa. Umesh Jaiswal thanked all and wished everybody well with the hope of better times.
On normal days when there is no restriction, fancy cars are often seen lining the Golf Course where IAS and IPS officers, along with the businessmen of Lucknow turn up to enjoy Golf sessions. While the Golfers dressed immaculately with spotless shoes cover the length and breadth of the course for the love of Golf, the humble caddies carry the kit bags of those who turn up to play golf. They are also the ones who keep spare golf balls handy as the players navigate from one hole to another.
While the spotlight is on the Golfers who bend, adjust their hat, tighten gloves, and with perfect grip on golf club take the shot, the caddies quietly do the carrying of load at meagre sums. For the uninitiated, Martin Purwa is a quietly nestled urban village in Lucknow away from the hustle and the bustle of the city. Interestingly it is a rare place where every second house has a caddie who is working at the golf course housed along the village. Martin Purwa owes its Golf legacy to Frenchman Claude Martin, born in 1735 in the French town of Lyon. The man who gave Lucknow the La Martiniere Boys College.
