Varanasi: Ahead of the visit of the Prime Minister the city of Varanasi interestingly got a lesser known name change which did not make too much news. The name of the Manduadih station of Kabir’s Kashi has been changed which will now be known as Banaras. The Railway Board has given approval to rename Manduadih railway station as Banaras under Varanasi Division of North Eastern Railway. A board clearly spelling out the name Banaras has been put at the station.
The scholars of Kashi demanded that the board of the station should also be written in Sanskrit. The board has marked ‘Banarasah’. Banaras is also written on the tickets that are being received from July 15, 2021. In September 2020, Governor Anandiben Patel gave permission for the Manduwadih station to be renamed as Banaras. The station name is being updated in the main gate of the station as well as in the entire station premises and also online.
In the year 2020, just after getting permission, the railway officials removed Manduadih and got the board replaced with Banaras. The name Banaras was also written on many trains including Sivaganga, but was immediately amended after the guidelines from the headquarters. Boards of Manduadih were installed. After a lot of process, ‘Banaras’ has been allowed again.
The Banaras station is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The station complex has a large all class waiting room, escalator, lift, food plaza, VIP lounge, parking, cafeteria. A selfie point has also been made at the station. A small line engine has also been kept as a national flag and heritage. Apart from this, there is also a modern booking and reservation office.
