Rahul raised the demand of zonal presidents in 2014 itself
Given the challenging shape of Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi took the initiative to appoint senior leaders as “zonal presidents” and put the UPCC president in charge of coordination among these leaders. But senior leaders of the time like RPN Singh, Jitin Prasad, Raja Ram Pal and Rashid Masood found it difficult to work within the system. While Singh and Prasad are now in the BJP, Pal is with the Samajwadi Party.
The churning going on within the Congress on many names
Some of the names suggested by sections of the party for new leadership roles are former MP and retired bureaucrat PL Punia, former state president Nirmal Khatri, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) leader and one of the party’s two MLAs Virendra Choudhary. Some have even suggested a larger role for “spiritual master” Acharya Pramod Krishnam. According to party insiders, Punia’s administrative capacity will be useful to the party. The former bureaucrat, who hails from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, has led many of the party’s campaigns for Dalits and was instrumental in designing its campaign for the once reserved seats in UP. Moreover, Punia is also seen as an acceptable face in all party sections.
