IFFI 53 ends on a sticky note with comments on The Kashmir Files

Goa: Israel’s ambassador to India reprimanded filmmaker Nadav Lapid for his comments on The Kashmir files. The ambassador told the filmmaker through a letter that ‘you should be ashamed’. During this, he also talked about the relations between India and Israel. In a long letter posted on Twitter, Ambassador Naor Jillon wrote, “In Indian culture they say that guest is God. You have given the worst response to the honor, trust and hospitality extended to you by them including the invitation to chair the panel of judges at IFFI Goa.

He said, ‘I also said that when India is watching the content of Israel, then at such a time we should be polite with them.’ He wrote, ‘I am no film expert, but I know that it is insensitive to speak before reading deeply about such historical events, which are like open wounds in India, many people were involved and even today. paying the price. “I suggest that, as you have been vocal in the past, speak freely in Israel about what you do not like, but do not take your anger out on other countries,” he advised. I don’t know whether you have factual information before making such a comparison. I know I don’t have.”

Jilon tweeted, ‘You will go back to Israel thinking that you are bold and have made a statement. We the representatives of Israel will be here. You should check our message box after your bravery to see what effect it will have on the team working under my responsibility. Shame on the statement given on the film in India. Jury chief of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid termed Hindi film “The Kashmir Files” as “propaganda” and “obscene”.

Addressing the closing ceremony of IFFI 2022, Lapid said he was “disturbed and surprised” by the film being screened at the festival. “We are all disturbed and shocked by the film ‘The Kashmir Files’. It struck us as a propaganda and vulgar film that was inappropriate for an artistic and competitive section of such a prestigious film festival.” I feel comfortable sharing this spirit with you openly because the spirit of the festival can truly embrace critical discussion that is essential to art and life, Lapid said.
