IIT-Kanpur, Dept. of Material Science students celebrate Padarth, Research Scholars Day

• Workshops, and hand-on tutorials by research scholars were conducted

• Ongoing research projects include development of wound-dressing materials, materials recycling, sustainable energy materials, harvesting energy from traffic movement

Kanpur: The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, organized the 4th edition of its annual student symposium, “Padarth (Research Scholar Day) 2023”. The event highlighted the advances in materials science and encouraged research scholars to present their recent findings, exchange ideas, and foster collaborations.

Prof. Animangsu Ghatak delivered a lecture on ‘Role of Hierarchical surface structure on adhesion’. He explained how animals like lizards, geckos, and other insects adhere strongly to surfaces of different kinds and how artificial hierarchical surface structures could be used for making reusable papers, which can reduce environmental burden and consumption of resources like energy, water, materials and time.

Workshops and hands-on tutorials in machine learning in materials science, and density functional theory, were organized by Research Scholars,  Owais Ahmad,  Nikhil Chaurasia,  Saumya Ranjan Jha, and  Albert Linda.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation in the events such as oral presentations, poster presentations, workshops, materials science quizzes, and a metallography competition. The scholars presented their work on various interdisciplinary fields ranging from biomaterials, ceramics, metals, electronics materials. The research scholars are working in areas like the development of wound dressing materials, simulation and technological advances in metallurgical processes, materials recycling and sustainable energy materials. Harvesting of stray mechanical energy from traffic movement is being done by triboelectric nanogenerator. Prof. Kallol Mondal, Head of the Department and Prof. Shikhar Misra also spoke during the event.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, is one of the premier institutions set up by the Government of India. Registered in 1959, the institute was assisted by nine leading institutions of the U.S.A in the setting up of its academic programs and laboratories during the period 1962-72. With its record of path-breaking innovations and cutting-edge research, the institute is known the world over as a learning center of repute in engineering, science, and several interdisciplinary areas. The institute has been consistently ranked among top engineering colleges by NIRF. In addition to formal undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the institute has been active in research and development in areas of value to both industry and government.
