Kolkata: Started from Cooch Behar in 1921, the Kolkata Derby has entered is centenary year. For anyone having closely watched this event are well aware that two of the biggest fixtures until this day remain arch rivals SC East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan. The teams will be playing against each other in the seventh season of the Hero Indian Super League. These are teams who play for the first time in the seventh season, but in a completely different place.
While ATK Mohun Bagan are table toppers, East Bengal has been eliminated from the playoffs. This will be their second time coming face to face. ATKMB prevailed in ISL’s first Kolkata derby. The two now take on each other in a landmark Kolkata derby at the Fatorda Stadium later today. Both will play their best to get three points.
As SC East Bengal coach Robbie Fowler keeps his eyes on the stands there will be a chance for him and his team to do something special for their fans. However the team does not have any opportunities to do anything special. Antonio Lopez Hobbs & Co., on the other hand are aiming to play the final in March and would like to make the match memorable by taking three points from the match.
Had it been in any other year, it would surely have been at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata and it would be crowded with spectators, but for this match, the stands at Fatorda will be empty this year.
After 17 matches, Bagan have scored 36 points while East Bengal have managed to score 17 points. Despite this difference, this match will be different from other matches. For East Bengal, this derby will be an opportunity to set an opening marker for next season. This team has got much less preparation time in the tournament than others and this was reflected in its initial performances.
East Bengal assistant coach Tony Grant said, “We have improved and you can see the players enjoying their game. Derby has a lot of memories and history attached to it. ”
