India jumps five spots in FIFA rankings

New Delhi: On the strength of victories against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan in the most recent Tri-nation competition, the Indian men’s football team rose five positions  to take up position 101 in the FIFA rankings. After victories in Imphal last month of 1-0 and 2-0 against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan, respectively, India moved up from 106th to 99th rank, gaining 8.57 rating points and five positions.

The last ranking chart was published on December 22 of last year; this was the first one of this year. India is now one position above Kenya and one position under New Zealand.

The Igor Stimac-coached squad, however, is ranked 19th out of 46 Asian countries with a total of 1200.66 points. The highest position for India was 94th, reached in 1996. Seldom has the nation dropped below the top-100. Argentina, the defending world champions, moved up one spot to the top of the rankings. France, Brazil, Belgium, England, Netherlands, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, and Spain round out the top ten.
