New Delhi: After winning the Men’s Junior Asia Cup, the Indian junior hockey team will look to maintain its winning streak against arch-rivals Pakistan in the first match of the Sultan of Johor Cup here on Friday.
India has been placed in Pool B along with Malaysia, Pakistan and New Zealand while Germany, Australia, South Africa and Great Britain have been placed in Pool A. Johor Cup defending champions India had won the title for a record fourth time with a 2-1 victory in the Junior Asia Cup in June in the last match against Pakistan.
India will face Malaysia and New Zealand in the group stage on October 28 and 30 respectively. The top two teams in the group will get a place in the semi-finals.
Indian captain Uttam Singh said, “We will aim to make a strong start to our campaign with a win against Pakistan and maintain consistency in our performance till the final.” Will try to implement the strategy in every match.
It has been a successful year for the Indian junior team where apart from winning the last tournament of the Sultan of Johor Cup, the team also won the Junior Asia Cup title. After this, the team also performed well in the recent four-nation Under-21 tournament in Germany. The tournament will give the team an opportunity to test their combinations and assess various opposition teams ahead of the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup 2023.
