Indian Rishi Sunak to head Britain as PM

London: Indian-origin Rishi Sunak has created history by becoming the Prime Minister of Britain. He is the first person of Indian origin who has reached the post of Prime Minister of Britain. Not only this, Rishi Sunak is the first Hindu PM of Christian majority UK. He is also Britain’s first non-white prime minister.

In fact, Penny Mordent has withdrawn her name from the race for British PM, clearing the way for Sunak. Several prominent Conservative MPs had supported Sunak, leaving Johnson’s camp.

These include former Home Minister Priti Patel, cabinet ministers James Cleverly and Nadeem Jahavi. Priti Patel herself is a former British minister of Indian origin who resigned from her post last month after Liz Truss was elected Prime Minister. She said the Conservative Party should give Sunak a chance to lead.

On becoming the Prime Minister of Britain, Rishi Sunak said, ‘It is the greatest privilege of my life that I have got the opportunity to serve the party I love and serve the country. I thank Liz Truss for the service she has rendered to the nation. She served with dignity amidst many changes. I am honored to have the support of my parliamentary colleagues and to be elected as leader of the Conservative and Unionist parties.

Boris withdrew his name

Patel supported Sunak after more than half of the party’s MPs had already publicly supported Sunak’s candidature. In fact, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdrew himself from the race for the post of Prime Minister on Sunday night, saying that “this is not the right time” to return. This further increased the chances of victory for the 42-year-old Sunak on Diwali. The only competitor in the race for the post of Prime Minister was Penny Mordent, the leader of the House of Commons, the lower house of the British Parliament.
