Varanasi: In what seems to be a slam dunk moment for the state of Uttar Pradesh, the Sports Department under the guidance of ACS Sports Navneet Sehgal has decided that a state of the art basketball court will be developed under smart city project in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. Construction of the dedicated basketball court of international level will take place at Sigra Sports Hub. Leading the project will be international basketball player Dwight Howard. Apart from the court, an academy will be started for the players in the court. These details were shared by Additional Chief Secretary, Sports Dr. Navneet Sehgal.
In a recent conversation with Navneet Sehgal, Dwight Howard expressed his desire to start a basketball academy in Varanasi. In this regard, the Additional Chief Secretary inaugurated the Sigra Sports Complex under construction in Varanasi. He had a detailed meeting with the officials associated with the hub and observed international standards in this sports hub. Sehgal has given instructions to prepare the basketball setup. He also said there will also be a regular review of this project in the third week. Dwight Howard is a top NBA player and he plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. He is a big name in the internation basketball circuit.
Experts believe that the proposal is a very commendable step. With this, basketball players from all over the state will get exposure. International level coaching will be available and they will bring laurels to the state in the whole world. Under the mission, Khelo India work is being done to build this project. Work will be continuing in three phases. It includes International Competition Hall, Community Sports Centre, Sports Academy, Pavilion Building, Athletic Track cum Football Field, Cricket Ground, Cricket pitch etc.
There will be lawn tennis court, volleyball court, basketball and kabaddi court. Along with this, a sports hostel for male and female players of 100-100 beds will be built. Apart from this, the National Center of Excellence in this sports hub will also be established.
