New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today gave the go ahead for the official start of the vaccination. Modi launched the Co-WIN app which is going to act as a database for storing all vaccination related data. In one of the biggest vaccination drives three crore healthcare and frontline workers are to be vaccinated in the first phase after which there will be vaccination of 27 crore people over the age of 50 and those under 50 with co-morbidities. The drive is starting with approval of two vaccines – Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.
The authorisation to the vaccines has been granted by DCGI. The Prime Minister has already given instructions to state authorities to dispel rumours about safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Modi has said that cost for the first phase of vaccination drive will be borne by the Centre. Citizens will have to continue taking precautions even after the onset of vaccination drive.
Estimates show that India remains the second-worst affected country in the world facing the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Latest numbers show that the case count has gone upto 1,04,95,147 in past 24 hours. The active case load is at an all-time low of 2.14 lakh.
