Mirabai Chanu Wants To Compete With Self For Now
New Delhi: Indian star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will start as a strong contender for the Commonwealth Games and she says she will be competing against none other than herself. Chanu’s personal best is 207 kg (88 kg + 96 kg), which is better than Nigeria’s Stella Kingsley who is her nearest rival and has only lifted 168 kg (72 kg + 96 kg). Chanu had won a gold medal in the last Commonwealth Games. She then went on to win a silver medal at the Olympics, a bronze at the Asian Championships and a world record.
The player, who won silver in the 2014 edition of the Commonwealth Games and gold in the 2018 edition, said, “The Commonwealth Games will be easy for me. I will compete with myself. Looking at the future tournaments, I will have to give my best.” Chanu would like to improve her own clean and jerk world record of 119kg.
The former world champion also wants to improve in the 90kg in the snatch and feels it will be a bit mentally challenging. Earlier this month she failed to improve her snatch weight, failing to lift 89kg twice in domestic competition because of her back.
