Lucknow: In this scorching heat and rather disastrous Corona times, commuters who often travel by train are having to face another glaring problem.
The Railways introduced water vending machines at stations for better water facility to passengers at low prices. But now in the post COVID world these outlets better known as Water ATMS are lying without any use.
Even as trains have finally returned to the tracks and there is regular passenger movement, the water ATMS have not yet been reactivated eversince the lockdown happened for the first time. The responsibility of functioning of thes water ATMs is on IRCTC. IRCTC officials are quoted by the media saying that due to Corona, the water vending machine was stopped from 24 March 2020 during the lockdown in the entire country.
Reportedly the closure of these Water ATMs came into force after an order issued by the Railway Board. Now that more and more special trains are being operated on behalf of the Railways, passengers are realizing the need for water vending machines.
The tender of operating the water vending machine was given to the Watergen Company by IRCTC. It has been more than a year since the water vending machine shut down due to the lockdown. If sources are to be believed, now its tender has also ended. In such a situation, its operation will start only after the completion of the tender process.
If sources are to be believed, the company owes about 8 to 10 lakh rupees for electricity. The company owes much more than this in the form of rent.
Under the Swachh Bharat Mission campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was decided to install water vending machines at railway stations across the country.
