Noted BSP strongman and Former Minister Ramveer Upadhyay’s demise attracts a wave of mourning

Lucknow: Former minister Ramveer Upadhyay who had a long stint for two decades with the BSP has died. He was considered a special of former Chief Minister Mayawati. On the basis of which he made his place first in Hathras and then in Agra and then created a deep root.

MLA for four consecutive terms

Former Energy Minister Ramveer Upadhyay died late on Friday night at Rainbow Hospital in Agra. He was around 65 years old. He was battling cancer and other ailments for a long time. Ramveer Upadhyay was the cabinet minister of important departments like power and transport four times in the BSP government. There was a wave of mourning in the entire area as soon as the news of Ramveer’s death was received. These days he was undergoing treatment at his residence in Shastripuram in Agra.

Around 10 pm, when his health suddenly deteriorated, he was taken to Rainbow Hospital in Agra, where he died. Talking about the political career of former minister Ramveer Upadhyay, he contested his first election in the year 1993 as an independent candidate from Hathras assembly constituency.

After that he contested the assembly elections of 1996, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017 under the banner of BSP. Whenever the BSP government was formed in the state, then Ramveer Upadhyay became the cabinet minister. Ramveer’s brother Mukul Upadhyay has been an MLA from Iglas and then MLC. Upadhyay’s second brother Vinod Upadhyay has been the district panchayat president.

His younger brother Rameshwar Upadhyay is presently also the block head of Mursan. After receiving the news of his death, people started arriving at his Agra residence late in the night. From 1996 to 2017 four times in which the MLAs from Hathras, then Sikandra Rau and Sadabad reached Lucknow after winning the elections. He also brought his brothers and relatives into politics in Hathras. He was also accused of nepotism.

From 2009 to 2014, wife Seema Upadhyay contested from Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha constituency from BSP and defeated Raj Babbar of SP and made his wife an MP. Ramveer had mastered the Panchayat elections. When BSP’s social engineering became successful in the 2007 elections, his stature in the government increased. As a cabinet minister, Mayawati made the minister of departments like energy, medical education, transport and rural holistic development. Ramveer got disillusioned with the BSP during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

When Amit Shah came to Agra in 2019 as BJP President, Ramveer shared the stage with him at the Agra College ground. But did not formally take membership of BJP. There was a discussion during that time that he wants to contest his wife Seema from Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha seat on BJP ticket, but the BJP expressed confidence on the Jat card only. Rajkumar Chahar was nominated. He was expelled from the party by the BSP after the 2019 elections.

After three years, Ramveer resigned from the BSP. Contested from Sadabad on BJP ticket in the Vidhan Sabha elections 2022. In a close contest, SP RLD lost to alliance candidate Pradeep Chaudhary alias Gudu by about seven thousand votes. Guddo got 1.04 lakh votes while Ramveer got 98 thousand votes. His health was bad at that time. Didn’t go campaigning. For the first time in 25 years, he had to face defeat.
