In the fifth round of the qualifying round of Group B of the 15th Lucknow District Chess Championship, top seed Pawan Batham defeated Sameer in the final round to secure his place in the league.
In the fifth round of the championship being played at the Precision Chase Academy, top seed Pawan Batham showed aggressive play with the black pieces, forcing Sameer to concede defeat in just 16 moves. While on the second board Shivam Pandey defeated Aditya Seth in 33 openings in the irregular opening to win the Group B with 4.5 points.
On the third board, KK Khare and Tanishq Gupta had a tough fight and Tanishq won the match, showing the best end game.
Shivam Pandey was the winner of the group with 4.5 points, Pawan Batham and Tanishk Gupta had 4-4 points but got the second and third place respectively due to a tie-break while Sameer, Saeed Ahmed and Arjun Singh all scored 3.5-3.5.
Due to the tie-break, they finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Shivam Pandey, Pawan Batham, Tanishq Gupta and Sameer secured their place in the league round.
