Power workers, engineers on a two day strike against privatization policies of Centre

Lucknow: A two-day nationwide strike of power workers and engineers has started in protest against the privatization policies of the Central Government. All India Power Engineers Federation Chairman Shailendra Dubey said that along with the two-day strike notice given by the trade unions across the country, all the power workers and engineers of all the provinces of the country also are protesting against the privatization policies of the central government.

He said that electricity workers held protests at district headquarters across the country. There were strong protests in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bengaluru, Trivandrum, Bhopal, Patiala, Shimla, Jammu, Patna, Ranchi, Dehradun, demanding withdrawal of the policy of privatization.

Dubey said that there is a demand of the electricity employees and engineers that the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2021 should be withdrawn, all types of privatization process should be stopped, the electricity of Union Territories especially profit making Chandigarh, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Daman Diu and Puducherry.

The decision of privatization should be canceled, all the electricity employees appointed after the dissolution of the electricity boards should be brought under the old pension scheme.

Amalgamation of all power companies in the states to form SEB Limited like KSEB Limited of Kerala and HPSEB Limited of Himachal Pradesh, regular recruitment on regular posts and regularization of all contractual employees like Government of Telangana.

He said that the electricity workers are protesting nationwide against the privatization of Chandigarh. The Electricity Department of Chandigarh is continuously running in profit.

In 2020-21, the electricity department of Chandigarh has made a profit of Rs 257 crore, the losses of Chandigarh are only 09.2 percent and the tariff of Chandigarh is much lower than that of Haryana and Punjab. In such a situation, the privatization of the continuously profitable electricity department is not acceptable and a nationwide movement will be launched against it.
