Priyanka’s U.P Gamble

Lucknow: For long there has been a buzz that Priyanka Gandhi should take the lead in rebuilding the Congress. There have also been slogans like Priyanka Lao Congress Bachao. In this election for Uttar Pradesh it seems Priyanka has taken the need to steer forth her party very seriously. She was recently in the state capital of Uttar Pradesh and starting August she will be on a mass connect spree.  She is on a mission to rebuild the grand old party in Uttar Pradesh ahead of 2022 assembly polls.

Gandhi junior has said she would camp in the state from next month to connect with the grassroot. While speaking to journalists at a Congress leaders residence, Gandhi said that the party organization had become weak, but proactive efforts were underway to bring the organization back to life. She said the idea is that each village have at least 5-6 dedicated Congress workers.

She has also said that aligning with other parties was not ruled out.  She also reportedly said that former MPs and MLAs are welcome to contest the 2022 polls in the state. The party which won 269 seats in 1985 assembly polls and 94 seats in 1989 polls, has since then failed to even cross the 50 seats mark in successive assembly polls in the state.  Among the issues that are part of the Congress agenda are rising prices, the coronavirus situation, the recently held panchayat elections in the state and organisational training camps.

She held meetings with all Pradesh Congress Committee members and district and city presidents from various parts of the states, the sources said. She met kisan union representatives and understood work done by the party’s manifesto committee. Starting August she will  visit other districts of the state on dates yet to be announced by the party.
