Race to the post of U.P. DGP heats up
Lucknow: The exercise of appointing a permanent Director General of Police (DGP) in the state has once again intensified. Five IPS of the year 1988 batch are currently in the race for this post.
Currently Dr. DS Chauhan, who is holding the post of DGP, is going to retire on March 31. If he is not appointed as permanent DGP, he will retire this month.
The claims of DG Jail Anand Kumar and DG CBCID Vijay Kumar are stronger on the basis of longer service.
On May 11, 2022, the state government removed Mukul Goyal and handed over the charge of DGP to Dr. DS Chauhan.
He already had the charge of DG Intelligence and Director Vigilance. Since then he has been holding the charge of all the three posts.
If he gets appointment to the post of permanent DGP before retirement this month, he can get extension.
In such a situation, it is believed that preparations are on to send a panel of senior-most IPS officers of the state to the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, for the appointment of a permanent DGP. The state government can appoint any one as permanent DGP out of the three names to be sent from the commission as per the prescribed procedure.
According to the sources, it is certain that the permanent DGP will be selected from among the IPS officers of the year 1988 batch. Apart from Dr. DS Chauhan, these include Dr. Rajkumar Vishwakarma, Anil Kumar Agarwal, Anand Kumar and Vijay Kumar.
After being removed from the post of DGP, Mukul Goyal is the only IPS officer of 1987 batch working as DG Civil Security. Although his tenure is till the year 2024. Anil Kumar Agarwal and Dr. Rajkumar Vishwakarma are going to retire in the coming month of May from among the 1988 batch IPS officers. In this way, the claim of Anand Kumar and Vijay Kumar is stronger on the basis of longer service period.
