Lucknow: Sewer and tank sweepers will now have to give their acceptance certificate that they are ready to clean the sewer. Along with this, it will be mandatory for the agencies engaged in this work to insure such workers for 10 lakhs. This system was not in place till now. It has been now spelt out that necessary arrangements should be made for safety equipment for cleaning. Unsafe cleaning is a legal offense. Cleaning machines should be used under the supervision of trained supervisors. Officer-in-charge of local bodies will also be responsible for the negligence of private agencies.
Reportedly a helpline number will be issued for sewer cleaning. In case of non-compliance with the guidelines related to safety standards, if any accident occurs, then the senior officials of the body will also be responsible for that. This new system has been implemented to prevent accidents during sewer cleaning and to provide immediate financial assistance to the families of those who die in it.
