Bareilly : Department of Chemical Engineering, MJP Rohilkhand Unversity, Bareilly organized Distinguished Departmental Lecture on “Industrial Pollution Abatement: An overview”. Prof Prasenjit Mondal, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, delivered the lecture in the seminar hall of the department, yesterday.
Prof Mondal started the lecture by explaining the meaning of abatement. Prevention and control are known as an abatement. Industrial processes generate different types of pollution. In absence of proper abatement policies and practices, these enter into the environment and create different types of health issues and climate change. Depending upon the nature of pollutants generated, industries are classified into red, yellow, and green categories. The red categories industries are also known as grossly polluting industries that create the most pollution and require stringent norms to control environmental pollution from these industries.
In this lecture, the types of industry and their nature of pollution generation along with abatement strategies such as prevention and control techniques were discussed. Best practices in a few industry types were also discussed. He explained the difference between distilleries and sugar industries’ wastewater. ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) is only in distilleries and not in sugar industries.
