Swatantra Dev Singh gets a place in the BJP national executive

Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh  appointed Swatantra Dev Singh, former chief of its Uttar Pradesh unit, as a member of its national executive. Singh is also the Jal Shakti minister of the state. The move is being seen as a move to strengthen the party’s hold on the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Swatantradev Singh, however, ran into trouble in July when the minister of state working under him resigned after making serious allegations. Then the danger of Swatantradev Singh going to the post of minister was also hovering. But after getting a place in the National Working Committee, now he seems to be returning  to form again.

Swatantradev Singh has previously served as State General Secretary, State Vice President, in-charge of the party’s membership drive and has led various campaigns of the BJP. He has a long experience in organization and is known for his organizational skills. In order to strengthen the organization and spread the mass base among OBCs, the BJP made him the state unit president in 2019. BJP returned to power with a huge majority in the 2022 assembly elections.

As the OBC face, Swatantradev Singh, who was in the BJP, was rewarded with a cabinet berth in the Yogi 2.0 government. He served as the Transport Minister in the Yogi 1.0 government. Singh was brought forward as an OBC face in UP but the corruption allegations in his department took a toll on his image. However, after this selection, Singh thanked the national leadership of the party in a tweet. “I will be fully determined and dedicated to fulfill this responsibility given to me by the organization,” he said.

In fact, in July itself, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dinesh Khatik, who worked under State Jal Shakti Minister Swatantradev Singh, had made allegations of major corruption in the department. Since then the union had become active. Due to the allegations made by Khatik in his letter, the BJP was being accused of being anti-Dalit.

The pressure increased so much that Swatantradev Singh had to go to Yogi’s court and give an explanation. Although he had to leave the post of state president under the pressure of the Sangh, but Yogi had given him asylum as a cabinet minister.
