Birmingham: Vijay Kumar Yadav of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh won a bronze medal in the men’s 60kg category in judo at the Commonwealth Games, which is India’s eighth medal in these games. With this, Sushila Devi Likabam got a silver medal in the 48 kg category of women’s judo.
Vijay Kumar Yadav achieved this success by winning another match after winning the repechage match. Vijay Kumar Yadav won the repechage match against Dylan Munro of Scotland and then played the bronze medal match and defeated Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus 10-0 in a one-sided 10-0 match. Vijay Kumar Yadav took full advantage of the opponent’s mistake and won in just 58 seconds. He was defeated by Australia’s Joshua Kaz in the quarterfinals.
In the men’s 60kg repechage, Yadav defeated Dinlan Munro of Scotland to make it to the bronze medal bout.
Apart from weightlifting, his was India’s first and overall 7th medal. Vijay Kumar Yadav hails from Varanasi, he has also practiced at the Sai Center in Lucknow for a long time and he has also received high level training under the guidance of CEO of UP Judo Association, Munawwar Anzar.
