Lucknow: Women empowerment is the new flavour of the day in the country. From filling fuel in vehicles in petrol pumps, now the next big wind of change was felt at a city Durga Puja. In a first, three trained women “Dhakis” (drummers) played the traditional drum ( Dhak ) during Durga Puja festival in Lucknow. These women played the dhak at Mitro Sangho Puja Samiti of Model House. The three women hailed from North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal at the pandal which is a replica of upcoming Ram temple in Ayodhya. The trio was seen sporting a yellow sari with a red border.
The trio are taught the art by guru Gokul Chandra Dass who got inspired by women playing instruments in the US. When the women started getting the money they started working hard and gradually it became a profession. The trio has played far and wide in places like West Bengal, Assam and Odisha. This is the first time they came to Lucknow.
They have been playing for a little over half a decade. They have performed in a TV reality show too. Never in the past has the capital witnessed women playing ‘Dhak’ in Durga Puja.
