Lucknow: In its 19th year running, the National Book Fair has returned to its grand old self as it returns to its place of origin, Balrampur Garden at Ashok Marg. This year things are not only larger than life for the Book Fair with a bigger venue, it is also that year where the scourge of the Corona pandemic is on the wane. As life sans restrictions makes Book Fair hopping exciting, this year the event not just has a wide variety of offerings, it also has several big ticket city folk who made a beeline for the event.
All kinds of literature is attracting book lovers in the 10 day, 19th National Book Fair. The literary events here are attracting the intellectual class, so poetry, storytelling, novels, subject-specific and general-topic books are being seen and bought by the people of Nawabi city.
Based on the theme of every home library, at least 10 percent discount is being given on every book in this fair. Omprakash Kashyap’s book on Periyar is in great demand at Setu Prakashan’s stall. Books published this year include Novel Aur Des, Vivad Nahin Hastakshep, Andheri Raat Ke Taare, Vilopan, Murtiyon Ke jungle Mein, Duriyon Keg hereMein, Pallipar, Bastiyon Ka Karwan and Aahat Naad. Books like Maharana, Veer Savarkar, Supercop Ajit Doval, Dynamic DM, Bharat 2047, Azadi 75, which came to Prabhat’s stall this year, are being liked. A large number of books of reference texts for colleges and universities were available in the stall of Rajkamal along with award-winning literature. Various competitions of dance, painting, cartoon making, essay writing, singing etc. are being organized online for the children in the fair.
There are many books to crack the competition along with higher education. Rajpal’s stall has unique literature, Ashok kumar Pandey’s Fundamentals of Marxism that expands understanding on various subjects, and Sohail Raza’s The Cards & Freud’s psychology.
Inspirational books like Aapka Bhavishya Aapke Haath Mein by APJ Abdul Kalam. EduGorilla’s stall has books related to Banking, Civil Services, Defense and Police, Engineering Admission, Management, Medical Admission, Railway, SSC, CAT, Law Admission among others are selling like hotcakes.
The organisers of the ongoing 19th edition of the National Book Fair at Balrampur Gardens here have provided a section to local writers free of charge to sell their works alongside other established publishing houses.
Convenor of the fair Manoj Chandel said the annual event had recorded its highest earnings of Rs2.1 crore in 2013 when former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam had also visited the fair. However, during the pandemic their earning dropped to Rs 70-80 lakh, he added. As per Chandel, the footfall to the event had also gone down over the years.
