Young Chess Masters light up Under – 14 Open Chess category with their moves

Lucknow: Sonbhadra’s Sankalp Tripathi became the champion with 5.5 points in the under-14 open category of chess competitions being played online in various age categories organized by the Uttar Pradesh Chess Sports Association. Though Lucknow’s Medhansh Saxena also scored 5.5 points but due to better tie-break, Sankalp was declared the champion and Medhansh had to be content with the second position. Arnav Dhamija of Ghaziabad got 3rd position with 5 marks.

In the Under-14 girls category, Niyati Vikram Singh of Varanasi won the title with 4 points. Though Bhavya Das of Ghaziabad and Unnati Lath of Varanasi also scored 4-4 points but according to tie-break they got second and third position respectively.

In the sixth and final round of the Under-14 age open category, the first board was played between Divyansh Pandey and Medhansh Saxena of Lucknow in the Catalan Opening, in which Medhansh played an aggressive game in the middle game with black pieces and won 30 moves. On the second board, the King’s Indian Defense was played between Parth Bhatnagar and Sankalp Tripathi of Ghaziabad, in which, playing with black pieces in the 23rd move, Sankalp beat Parth on a foot and took advantage in the middle game and won 41 moves. On the third board, a opening was played between Sanyam Srivastava and Arnav Dhamija of Lucknow, but taking advantage of the big mistake made by Sanyam in the middle game, Arnav earned full points in just 25 moves by forcing Sanyam to give up the bet.

In the women’s section under 14, in the fifth and final round, the first board was played in slav defense between Unnati Lath and Shubhi Gupta of Ghaziabad, in which, in the end game, Unnati took a walking lead and won the marathon 62 moves by winning full points. On the second clash, the game started in the Sicilian Defense between Vaishnavi Prakash and Bhavya Das of Varanasi, in which Bhavya, playing with black pieces, performed a fine end game and forced Vaishnavi to give up the game and earned full points in 59 moves


On the third board, Niyati Vikram Singh beat Prayagraj’s Priya Yadav with white pieces in a minority attack in the English opening to earn full points in 30 moves. The first and second place players in both the age groups will represent the state of Uttar Pradesh in the national competitions of under 14 open age group and girls category to be held from June 16 to June 18.

The final results of the under 14 age open category are as follows – Sankalp Tripathi 5.5 marks (1st position), Medhansh Saxena 5.5 points (2nd position) and Arnav Dhamija (3rd position) 5 points.

The final results of the under 14 age group of girls are as follows – Niyati Vikram Singh 4 marks (1st position), Bhavya Das 4 points (2nd position) and Unnati Lath (3rd position) 4 points.
